Chasing Waterfalls

7 May

When I made plans to go to Salt Lake City for my brother’s graduation, I instantly made plans to do a hike to Fifth Water Hot Springs. We went last year after his wedding and it was such an incredible place I had to return, especially after I found out there is a hole in the rocks in the waterfall you can stick your head through!

My cousin grabbed a snake on the hike down, he’s in vet school and very into animals. I decided to be brave and try holding the snake.

It was a wonderful day! I highly recommend this hike to anyone in the SLC/Provo area. It’s not hard with very little elevation gain so children and seniors can handle it.

A gorgeous hike!

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 3- Surfing, Valentine’s Lunch & Snorkelling

2 Apr

The morning of Day 3, I dragged Ryan out to Castle Beach in Kahuku to give surfing a try. I had found a local who rented boards for cheap and we got two boards for $75 for the week. I am no expert at all, I have had one lesson and a couple of sessions on my last Hawaiian visit with Leilani.

Image

My darling husband thought because he is a natural athlete (baseball, basketball, football) that he would hop on a board and go. Ha ha ha! I tried giving him a push but he didn’t like that so I tried to coach him. And a beginner coaching a beginner is not good. Needless to say, neither of us caught a wave that first day. I still enjoyed my zen time on the water but Ryan wasn’t happy.

Pre-Wedding Waterton Fun with My Sister

19 Mar

The morning of my wedding my sister and I got up early to shoot scenery around the park for my wedding video (I love video editing). Never mind a huge snow storm rolled in about three hours later and it wasn’t remotely this sunny out for the actual wedding. We still had a lot of fun. :)

I’m getting my wedding pics this Friday so expect a wedding post and then a ton of posts on my Hawaiian honeymoon adventures.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the severe lack of posts. As I get closer and closer to my wedding (11 days!) and Hawaiian honeymoon my focus has been elsewhere. I’ll be back when it all dies down with awesome adventures from Hawaii!

I've really been enjoying curling!

Friday Fitness Overview- Jan. 4

4 Jan

This was a bad week. A bad, bad week. As soon as Christmas was over I panicked and went into straight wedding mode and I have been skipping workouts to shop, design programs, cute and paste wine labels, etc.  I’m going to call this week my mulligan but I need to step it up!

Friday- Nothing

Saturday- 1 hour hike (300 cal)

My little brother Ben and I bundled up and hiked up Badger Mountain in the snow. I was feelign so restless after DAYS of inactivity I just had to get outside and move and I wasn’t about to let a little snow stop me.

Sunday- Thursday-  Nothing

However, I am about to step up my activity level a lot. Next week I will start curling once a week and taking a recreational cheer class AND training for the 2013 Moonlight Run!

Friday Fitness Overview

21 Dec

This week was not nearly as good as last week! Not in the slightest! I got sick on Monday and didn’t feel like myself again until today!

Friday- Snow shoeing! 1 hour. (About 500 cal.)

154909_10152348535335484_1441219343_n

Saturday- Nike Fitness workout 30 min. (262 cal)

Sunday- Rest Day.

Monday- Sick.

Tuesday- Sick.

Wednesday- Recovering still. Maybe it’s an excuse but when I don’t feel good, I don’t work out!

Thursday- BodySculpt 40 min. (231 cal)

This was a test of my dedication! I got to the gym and the zipper on my skirt was broken. I could not get the skirt off. As I saw it I had two options, I could leave, not work out and cut it off when I got home or I could cut it off at the gym, work out and quickly buy a cheap skirt to replace it after. So I went to the front desk, borrowed a pair of scissors and cut off the skirt! Ha ha! And it was worth it, because my glutes have NEVER burned as much as they did in today’s class!

Total Calories Burned- 993

I’m not gonna stress too much about this bad week, when you’re sick- you’re sick!

Snow Shoeing in Waterton December 2012

18 Dec

154909_10152348535335484_1441219343_n

I had a half day from work on Friday so of course I made plans to get outside and to the mountains for snow shoeing. I had originally planned to go up to Bertha Falls but when I pulled in there was so little snow that I opted to go on the tried and true trail to Cameron Lake.

The drive into Waterton Park

I got a late start and didn’t hit the trail until 3 pm.

My tracks just off the trail

I took the side path rather than the main trail, which is the trail I have taken cross country skiing and snow shoeing in the past. I was shocked at how much better shape I am in compared to my last snow shoe excursion. I wasn’t breathing as heavy, my legs weren’t as tired, it was awesome!

It was just me too. I didn’t see a single person on the trail. I also forgot my ipod so instead of listening to music like I usually do, I enjoyed the sound of my snowshoes crunching, my breathing, and the birds in the trees. Other than these sounds, it was completely silent. I did find myself wondering what I would do if a cougar attacked me. Ha ha! I have been alone in these mountains a lot without any trouble but once in a while I do wonder.

Saw an owl in the trees

I didn’t make it to Cameron Lake though. I was going along at a good place, but when it hit 3:45 and it was getting darker very quickly I got nervous and turned around. The last thing I wanted was to be stuck up there in the dark with no light! It was a lot of fun, but I would have had more fun if I had a companion.

Friday Fitness Overview

I discovered an AMAZING app this week! The new Nike Training Club app. This amazing app gives you a ton of free workouts you can do at home. All you need is weights and a wide space and you are good to go. These workouts get my heart pounding and I sweat buckets, all in 30-45 minutes. I am going to try to do a workout from this app five times a week and see if I can lean out before my wedding!

Friday- 20 minutes of Taebo with my workout buddy Catie! (175 cal)

Saturday- Nike Training Club Workout. 30 min. (262 cal)

Sunday- Nike Training Club Workout. 45 min. (393 cal)

This is what I look like after a killer workout. Not pretty, but super sweaty!

Monday- Yoga 40 min. (141 cal)

I had a great compliment today.  I walked into a meeting and a coworker said “Wow! You’re going to have to have your wedding dress taken in for sure!” That felt so good to hear because I don’t see a difference at all. Talk about motivation to keep it up!

I had a hard time sleeping though my body ached so bad. I had such a sharp pain in my right quad that I had to heat it and take ibuprofen. Hopefully that was a one time deal and I won’t ache like that again.

Tuesday- HIIT 30 min (240 cal)

Wednesday- Curling 30 min (168 cal)

I was planning on making Wednesday a much needed rest day. I have been exhausted and tight and sore. But curling was so fun it didn’t feel like a workout at all!

Thursday- Nothing. Rest Day.

Total Calories Burned this Week 1,379

So there you have it! I finally had a good week! Woot! Woot! However, I still need to step it big time if I want to lose by February! I would like to take off a pound a week but I don’t know if I can if all that work was only 1379 calories!

I am off to Waterton today for a snowshoeing adventure! :) That should be a good calorie scorcher.

Results of My Fitness Assessment

5 Dec

A few weeks back I did a free fitness assessment at the college with a Kiniseology student. I was hoping for a full body fat test as well as fitness but this was just a fitness. He did a few skin fold tests and said that I had very lean triceps. :)

Anyway, these results are based on the standards that Health Canada has set for Canadians.

  • Body Composition Rating: Very Good
  • Aerobic Fitness Score: Very Good
  • Musculoskeletal Fitness and Healthy Back Fitness Score: Good

“Through our tests it was obvious that you had plenty of strength in in your arms and legs (legs in particular) but lacked in your core.”

Interesting that I have a lot of strength in my arms and legs but not my core eh? It’s always been like that too! I was always the weakest at planks in track, and even now the older ladies in my fitness classes can beat me at planks.

December Fit Friend of the Month- Jessica

3 Dec

I want to start doing a monthly blog post where I feature a friend of mine who is dedicated to fitness. For my first post, it had to be my old college room mate and track & field team mate Jessica! This girl and I shared an obsession for working out and Gilmore Girls and have remained good friends ever since.  She has managed to hold onto that fit body from college track that I said goodbye to a LONG time ago!

What motivates you to stay fit?

My motivation to stay fit is all of the activities that I do, wakeboarding, hiking, skiing and paddle boarding. Staying in shape makes doing all of these activities easier and helps me become better at them.

How often do you work out each week on average?

On average I work out 5 days a week, I love having my weekends free to sleep.

What is your favourite type of workout?

My favorite work out right now is spin class with a hard lift session after. Kettle bells are also a big thing for me right now. I love switching up how I lift weights because I’m normally not that into lifting. I feel like it’s a good version of interval training as well, cardio with a little bit of lifting.

What is your go-to healthy snack?

My go to snack is a handful of almonds and pink lady apples.

GREAT back Jess!

GREAT back Jess!

What is your favourite brand of runners?

My favorite brand of running shoes is Asics because I pronate when I run and they have so much stability.

How do you motivate yourself to get out and be active on dark, cold, rainy Seattle days?

On cold, rainy days and most of winter in Seattle I load up on classes at my gym, spinning is my favorite but I really want to try the kickboxing class. Having a variety of classes and ways to work out help me not get bored during the winter.

Having a work out buddy also helps on the cold days, so I can’t just go home curl up under the covers. Another motivation is that the summers here are really warm and I figure that winter is a great time to get a head start on looking good.

What is the most physically challenging thing you have ever done?

The most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done is college track and doing two a days. Having to stay in top shape for so many months is always hard and challenging.

Any other fit tips you would like to share?

The best tip I’ve ever gotten is not to weigh yourself every day, it’s only a number. The best thing to do to is to take measurements of key areas, like thighs, hips, chest and arms. Also take a bunch of pictures along the way, pictures never lie. Always do a little bit of lifting, I hate it but it works.
