Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 7- Surfing & Final Beach Day

6 Apr

It was hard to believe how fast our honeymoon went. When we first arrived it seemed like we had a lot of time and all of a sudden it was over.

We had only gotten to surf once because we were so busy so this was our last chance to try to catch a wave. It didn’t go well, neither of us did catch a wave but I enjoyed my time on the water big time. Ryan felt it was a waste of time (he doesn’t get the zen of surfing I guess). But we did get a bunch of fun shots on the beach.

After this not so successful surf session, we dropped off the boards and hung out/showered on Kualoa Beach.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 6- Hiking Hauula Trail & Laie Point

5 Apr

We started off that morning with a hike on Hauula Trail Loop.  It is a 3 mile loop with a little climbing, a great place for a trail run or a family hike.

Park at the beach across from 7-11 and head up the residential road towards the mountain.

DSCF3538

There is a little parking at that yellow gate ahead but it’s better to park on the beach

DSCF3539

You’ll walk along a road for a little bit

DSCF3540

To the right you’ll see this sign for the beginning of the loop

I’ll warn you right here. At the loop you get to choose to go right or left. We went right because it started off uphill so we thought we would get the uphill climb out of the way. Go left! There is less climbing if you go left than to the right.

It was a great, easy, beautiful hike

We stopped by Laie Point to see if we could jump (like I did in 2008) but it was way too windy and choppy so we got a few pictures and called it a day.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 5- Funeral, Snorkelling & a Show

4 Apr

Saturday was a unique day because it was my Great Uncle’s funeral. You would never guess it looking at me, but my great grandmother is Samoan. This was Ryan’s chance to meet my brown relatives. Not exactly the happiest occasion for it, but it was nice to be there to pay my respects and represent my mom’s family.

After the funeral, we headed to Turtle Bay cove for more snorkelling and the most incredible thing happened, we swam with a sea turtle!! All my years of snorkelling in that cove and I finally got to swim with a wild sea turtle.

Ryan really enjoyed snorkelling

Bye turtle!

That evening, we headed to the Polynesian Cultural Centre evening show, Ha; a breathe of life. I have been going to the night show for a long time and this was the most dramatic, pageantry one I’ve seen.

These photos don’t belong to me, I googled them

It was wonderful! Ryan and I did laugh because there was one skinny white guy dancing and he stood out like a sore thumb. If we had more money, I would have taken Ryan to the centre for the day as there is so much great cultural stuff to see and learn.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 4- Hiking to Laie Falls

3 Apr

One must-do item on our vacation itinerary was hiking to Laie Falls. I did this hike with my sister Leilani in 2008 and I had to share this experience with Ryan.

This is about a 10 mile round trip hike and the incline isn’t too bad.

DSCF3485

Ryan always starts our hikes off with a cigarette. Ha!

Park at the football field or the cricket field and head through the gates onto that dirt road. Follow it in a little ways until you see this blue sign on the left side.

DSCF3486

I don’t know about the permit thing. We didn’t have one and I don’t know if you would have got in trouble because of it.

DSCF3487

The trail starts off on a slight incline

You’ll quickly approach a fork in the trail with a sign that tells you which way to go  (the left)

At around mile 4 you walk through a tunnel of trees

DSCF3515

After you turn off the trail toward the falls  you have some scrambling to do to go down to the falls. Proceed cautiously, there are ropes to help you but it is slippery, narrow and steep.

When you get to the falls, this is your view:

I just love how buff I look in this pic! Ha ha

This is an amazing hike and took us about 3 hours in total and that was with hanging out and swimming under the falls.

And don’t forget not to pick the local’s coconuts. Ha ha!

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 2- Licking a Dolphin & Honeymooners Walk

1 Apr

On Day 2 we headed to Sea Life Park on the east side of Oahu because Ryan and I had booked a session to swim underwater with the sharks!

We got there just in time to enjoy the dolphin show and watch the world’s only wolphin. A killer whale/dolphin. This show brought me back to the days when I wanted to be a marine biologist. Before I realized you need to be good at science. Ha ha!

Our session wasn’t until 3 p.m. so we enjoyed the park all day. It wasn’t huge, but had a lot of cool things to offer.

When we reported to the activity centre for our swimming with the sharks, they told us they had  a malfunction with the equipment and they couldn’t take us under with the sharks.  They offered to upgrade us to the dolphin encounter which includes petting and kissing a dolphin. I was beyond excited but Ryan was disappointed, he really wanted to swim with the sharks.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 1- Beach and Turtle Bay

31 Mar

I’m back! Thank goodness for the long weekend which gave me a chance to catch up on everything. I am expecting my wedding pictures any day now so watch my Wedding link for a TON of photos in the next week or so. But I have been dying to share my Hawaiian adventures so let’s get started!

After spending the night in Great Falls and 12 hours of flying or waiting for flights, Ryan and I finally arrived in Oahu! I had been looking forward to show Ryan my favourite place in the world for months and months.

DSCF3376

We rented a condo at Pat’s on Punaluu for only $95/night! A steal for Hawaii. This beach front property was the perfect place for a honeymoon. My only complaint is that the bedroom is on the street side of the place and the traffic was so loud I couldn’t sleep on the comfy bed. But there was a futon in the living room, so we slept there and listened to the waves. You can find the condo we stayed in HERE.

Image

We spent the morning out on the beach right in front of us, swimming around and enjoying the beach. Ryan saw his first sea turtle (a big guy too) swim by us and we both got our first reef scratches, ha ha!

After lunch we headed to my favourite resort that I have yet to ever stay in; The Turtle Bay in Kahuku. My mum has been taking us to the cove at this resort for years. She even had her second wedding at the Sunset Room in the resort and it’s where we like to eat when we stay on the north shore.

We did a loop around the place and I showed Ryan all the places that he saw on Forgetting Sarah Marshall (one of my favourite movies).

Eating Healthy on A Road Trip

23 Dec

Ryan and I headed off to Richland, Washington yesterday for Christmas. It was a ten hour drive and I was determined to eat healthy on the way there instead of stopping for junk like I normally do.

Here is what I packed for a healthy road trip.

celery sticks

instant coffee and green tea

chicken sandwiches

cut up dragon fruit

Lots of fruit

Greek Yogurt

Pomegranate Seeds

Bottles of water

Two bags of snacks

Eating a pear on the road

Pomegranates on the road

Now, we didn’t follow my eating plan to a tee. We did stop for coffee at Timmy’s and got a cheeseburger at Wendy’s in Cranbrook.

Tmmy's, Ryan and the mountains. Three of my favorite things

But other than those two little slips we ate well and enjoyed a beautiful (but super long) drive through the mountains.

Nipika Mountain Resort near Radium, B.C.

15 Aug

Last weekend was girls reunion weekend where some of my friends from my childhood got together to catch up. I had won a free two night stay at the Nipika Mountain Resort last year while at the Calgary Outdoor Adventure Show and this was the perfect reason to use my prize.

Upon arriving, we couldn’t believe how beautiful this place was. It is made up of probably about 8 cabins circling a large field and it sports a wood fire hot tub and a little man-made lake fed by a stream , perfect for swimming. There is no formal check in process either. I thought it was weird that we had to pay a month up front, but when you arrive there is a white board that lists the cabins and names the people staying in them. You go to your unlocked cabin and settle in.

Mitchell Cabin is the one we stayed in

Stunning Views at Nipika

There is no cell reception and the cabins don’t have phones, so I had to quickly go borrow a satellite phone to call my boyfriend and let him know why I wouldn’t be talking to him during my stay. This resort runs on solar power so there are no appliance besides a fridge. No microwave, no hair dryers or anything. It is the most remote you can get. Perfect for anyone who needs to getaway but can never seem to find the excuse to do so.  This Resort is owned by a married couple and their son, Steve helps run the place. As we unloaded the care, we realized that we had forgotten our cooler full of food back home in Lethbridge! And after almost 6 hours of driving we did not want to drive 45 minutes and back to Radium to get food. Steve was a peach and gave us butter, milk, eggs and some steak so we could have dinner and go to Radium in the morning as originally planned.

Every cabin has a view of the mountains

Nipika is surrounded by trails, both for hiking and mountain biking. The resort also has paddocks and they welcome visitors to bring their horses to go on trail rides. They also have a barn that has been converted into a day lodge, making this place the perfect place to have a remote wedding.

Horses

It is a very short walk from the Kootenay River which was a beautiful shade of aqua (the cameras didn’t catch it) but was moving much to fast for swimming.

Kootenay Rover

Relaxing in the wood burning hot tub (it was a scorching 50 degrees when we took the lid off!)

Saturday morning we had breakfast, sipped coffee on the patio and headed into Radium to the Hot Springs.

Enjoying the view from the patio

The drive through Kootenay National Park is just stunning and I wish we had gotten more photos of the  road you have to drive through, the red rock cliffs are very cool.

Part of the highway

You don’t have to pay the daily park fee for Kootenay National Park if you are just using the hot springs. There is plenty of parking and clearly marked signs. Now, here is my problem with Radium Hot Springs- it is really just a swimming pool! They have a cool pool with a diving board and slide for swimming and the hot pool, which is fed by the hot springs. I had been expecting natural hot pools like the one I used to frequent in Baker National Forest in Washington so paying a $6 entry fee and entering a locker room and going into basically a large hot tub wasn’t all that fun.  The information guide told us there were natural hot springs about an hour and a half south of Radium around Canal Flats.

The hot springs at Baker Mt. in Washington

Radium Hot Springs, a LOT different!

We still really enjoyed the hot springs and decided to continue the relaxation by laying on the floating dock on the little swimming hole at Nipika and reading for hours.

This swimming hole is perfect on a hot day

That evening we had a fire at the large fire pit in the middle of the field. Did I mention that fire wood is included in your stay and piled next to your cabin (which has a wood burning fire-place)?

Chopping wood for the fire. I made the daisy crown and crowned myself the Queen of Nipika

Tending the fire

All in all it was an amazing stay! I would recommend staying for more than two nights if you are driving a way though because we didn’t have time to go on any hikes and we didn’t bring bikes which would have been really cool. This is a place you stay for at least 4 nights to a week and soak in your surroundings. I want to come out this winter and try cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.

Enjoying the view at twilight by the fire
