How to Live an Adventurous Life (When You Aren’t Rich)

11 Nov

I had the greatest compliment ever about a month back. A friend was telling me how at a party of mutual acquaintances people started talking about me and how I “actually do stuff.” Since being told that I have thought a lot about it because in my mind I don’t do enough. I have never travelled outside North America,  I haven’t biked across the country, or gone scuba diving, or hiked in the rain forest.

I do make the best with what I have though. Even in Seattle, on weekends I would drag my sisters on adventures nearby. I can’t help it, there is a reason my mantra is “Life isn’t worth living without adventure.” I have to go!

So I thought I would share some tips based on what I do. I am very fortunate to have the mountains only an hour drive away from me.

GET OUTSIDE!!

I can’t stress this one enough. You will never have any adventures stuck indoors.

Even if it’s just a walk, get outside!

Find out what is around you

Check out local blogs, magazines and websites to learn what activities are in your area. Make a list so when you feel restless you can pick something from the list and go.

I am lucky enough to have the Rockies only an hour away

Live in a City? GET OUT OF IT!

Drive until you hit country, stop at a local gas station and ask about hiking trails or local activities. I  was a little lucky in Seattle because there were beaches and lakes and walking trails in the City. But it doesn’t feel the same as being out in the middle of nowhere.

I was always dragging my sisters out to the Snoqualmie area (about 45 min from Seattle) for hiking.

Go to bed early

Okay, I have gotten a lot of flack for being the first person to leave social gatherings and for not drinking a lot. Last  summer I was told I was missing out on life by not partying with my friends. But the next day I hiked to Crypt Lake in Waterton and it was one of the most incredible hikes of my life. I feel that while I was out in the mountains and that individual was sleeping off his hangover that he was the one missing out on life. It’s hard to be adventurous when you are tired and hung over.

I don’t think I missed out going to bed early for this.

Buy the equipment

When I wanted to start snowboarding I went out and spent $400 on gear. When I wanted to start hiking I spent $100 on hiking shoes. I find when I invest in the activity I am more likely to do it because I don’t want my hard earned money to go to waste.

Find active friends

If you have couch potato friends, odds are you won’t be able to talk them in to going on a random adventure. Find some active friends who are up for anything.

My hiking buddy Catherine. That little head at the bottom is her daughter. :)

Just go!

So it’s a beautiful day, you have an activity in mind but you can’t find anyone to come with you. Just go by yourself. I have done many hikes on my own because I wasn’t about to sit at home. Bring music and take off. Make sure someone knows where you are going (just in case).

Would have been a shame to miss out on this because I couldn’t find anyone to come with me. I have hiked Bears Hump alone so many times

Don’t be afraid

My episode of Make it Happen hasn’t aired yet and sometimes I wonder what people think. I mean, what person goes on a random reality TV show? But I got to kayak in an amazing setting with an Olympic medalist kayaker. That once in a lifetime experience is something I will remember forever. It was scary and the night before my flight I was wondering why I do the crazy things I do, but I got over my fear and had a wonderful time.

So there you have my tips for local adventurous living. If I had money I can only imagine the adventures I would go on.

So what do you do? What’s your favourite local adventure?

Snowboarding Makes My Toes Tingle

1 Jan

Literally! Let me explain…

Friday was my day to try out my new super sweet snowboard boots and hit the mountains.

beautiful vans with BOA laces. Yeah!

After Christmas I was feeling poor and decided to hit up Pass Powderkeg in Blairmore, Alberta. It’s a small hill but the price is right ($32 for a full day pass). I was really disappointed when I pulled up and saw that they only had one small run open. Bunny hill material really. I was tempted to turn around and just go home but since I haven’t been snowboarding in over a year I went ahead and hit it up.

I was very excited to get going for the first time in over a year!

I took my first run and the snow was choppy and the run very easy but it still felt good. My laces were nice and tight unlike my last boots which I had to re-tie after every run. But then I headed to the lift…or rather- the T-bar!! A t-bar! I have heard of these but have never seen one before. So I got up there and told the lifties nervously that I had never been on one before and they placed it under my butt and it started to pull. I caught an edge and came so close to falling over! I was able to hold on but got pulled up by my waist which wasn’t very comfortable.

I didn't DARE try to take a pic while on this thing!

I made it up in one piece but my legs felt like I had finished a run, usually the chair lift up is your relaxation time. Anyway, off I went but after three runs my feet were tingly and numb and I had to go to the car to take them off for a quick break.

Oh pretty boots! Why?!?

That’s how I spent my day. I would ride for about an hour and then the pain in my feet would become unbearable and I had to go take my boots off. My boots are snug but I read that they stretch out after 4-6 rides. Am I putting my bindings on too tight? Is that possible? Any advice would be really helpful. I can’t go to a bigger place with long runs if I have to stop every 45 minutes or so to let my feet out.

However, it was still a fun day, it was nice to get back into the swing of things. Hopefully this is the start of a fun-filled winter.

Like my pink pants?

Snowboarding Season 10-11

1 Feb

So I have only gotten to go snowboarding twice so far this winter and neither for very long. I am extremely bummed out and am hoping that Feb/Mar will get me up to the mountains as many times as possible.

Kicking Horse

The first place I got to check out was Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, BC. This was the coolest place I have seen, really I went to Whistler for the Olympics and was more impressed with Golden. First off, the resort is literally a 10 meter walk from the gondola. They provide you with lockers to keep your stuff in, so you suit up and head out to the lifts! The resort itself is really nice, condos with full kitchens, very comfortable. It had three restaurants in the resort, Peaks Grill being my fave. The mountain itself is incredible with a restaurant at the peak and had so many runs. Now, this was my very first time in Rocky Mountain snow and I don’t know if I can ever snowboard in that slush in the Cascades every again. It was so dry and powdery, perfect for long, easy turns. Sadly I only had an hour, and it took my fat butt 40 minutes to get to the bottom and I was exhausted!!

The next place I went was Castle Mountain, close to Pincher Creek. I had planned to meet up with my friend Catie and her husband but had a series of mishaps that made me an hour late. So they

Castle Mountain

weren’t at the rental office. I figured I would potentially spot them on the mountain and off I went with my ipod. There were some great runs, and again the snow was amazing but it was COLD!!!!!! -20 at the base, so who knows what it was at the top. I put in a few runs before I had to go in for a half hour. After that I got in two more and said “Nuts to this!” and headed to the car. It felt like such a waste of time and money but I just couldn’t enjoy myself fully when it was so cold. My little nose had a vicious wind burn on it too. So I am goin to wait a couple weeks for things to warm up a little and try again. Yes I know the snow won’t be nearly as good on a warmer day, but I will enjoy it so much more!

So there you have it, My snowboard adventures thus far. Sadly no pictures, I have to bring my phone next time I go and snap a few shots.
