My Brother Graduates University

6 May

This weekend, I road tripped 12 hours down to Salt lake City to watch my little brother Bruce graduate from the University of Utah. While the driving sucked, the trip itself was so fun! The weather in SLC was so nice and the leaves were already out so it felt like summer. The bare trees here in Lethbridge were starting to bum me out.  And I am always a happy camper when I am close to the mountains!

Meet My New Adventure Buddy- Rocky Barkboa

8 Apr

I have always wanted a dog but have always been in a rental where it wasn’t possible. After we bought our house in August I decided to wait until after the wedding to commit to a puppy. The weekend we returned from Hawaii, I found a little black lab who stole my heart and I brought him home.

Rocky and I have already had a couple of adventures. On an unseasonably warm day we went and played in the mud.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 1- Beach and Turtle Bay

31 Mar

I’m back! Thank goodness for the long weekend which gave me a chance to catch up on everything. I am expecting my wedding pictures any day now so watch my Wedding link for a TON of photos in the next week or so. But I have been dying to share my Hawaiian adventures so let’s get started!

After spending the night in Great Falls and 12 hours of flying or waiting for flights, Ryan and I finally arrived in Oahu! I had been looking forward to show Ryan my favourite place in the world for months and months.

We rented a condo at Pat’s on Punaluu for only $95/night! A steal for Hawaii. This beach front property was the perfect place for a honeymoon. My only complaint is that the bedroom is on the street side of the place and the traffic was so loud I couldn’t sleep on the comfy bed. But there was a futon in the living room, so we slept there and listened to the waves. You can find the condo we stayed in HERE.

We spent the morning out on the beach right in front of us, swimming around and enjoying the beach. Ryan saw his first sea turtle (a big guy too) swim by us and we both got our first reef scratches, ha ha!

After lunch we headed to my favourite resort that I have yet to ever stay in; The Turtle Bay in Kahuku. My mum has been taking us to the cove at this resort for years. She even had her second wedding at the Sunset Room in the resort and it’s where we like to eat when we stay on the north shore.

We did a loop around the place and I showed Ryan all the places that he saw on Forgetting Sarah Marshall (one of my favourite movies).

Friday Fitness Overview- Jan. 4

4 Jan

This was a bad week. A bad, bad week. As soon as Christmas was over I panicked and went into straight wedding mode and I have been skipping workouts to shop, design programs, cute and paste wine labels, etc.  I’m going to call this week my mulligan but I need to step it up!

Friday- Nothing

Saturday- 1 hour hike (300 cal)

My little brother Ben and I bundled up and hiked up Badger Mountain in the snow. I was feelign so restless after DAYS of inactivity I just had to get outside and move and I wasn’t about to let a little snow stop me.

Expanded my musical tastes

Through the Rewind Button project, I listened to the Top 40 Rock albums of all time, according to Rolling Stone. This project really expanded my musical tastes and helped me develop an appreciation for various artists like Bob Dylan and to learn the story of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Enjoying Winter- Sledding

13 Nov

I am a snow gal. I don’t know if it’s because I was born and raised in Fort McMurray or that I was born in December or that my dad was a dog sledder so snow runs in my veins. I am one of the few people who cheer when a snow storm is in the forecast.

This weekend I made the most of winter and went on a long winter walk and went sledding on both Saturday and Sunday.

Away I go!

How to Live an Adventurous Life (When You Aren’t Rich)

11 Nov

I had the greatest compliment ever about a month back. A friend was telling me how at a party of mutual acquaintances people started talking about me and how I “actually do stuff.” Since being told that I have thought a lot about it because in my mind I don’t do enough. I have never travelled outside North America,  I haven’t biked across the country, or gone scuba diving, or hiked in the rain forest.

I do make the best with what I have though. Even in Seattle, on weekends I would drag my sisters on adventures nearby. I can’t help it, there is a reason my mantra is “Life isn’t worth living without adventure.” I have to go!

So I thought I would share some tips based on what I do. I am very fortunate to have the mountains only an hour drive away from me.

GET OUTSIDE!!

I can’t stress this one enough. You will never have any adventures stuck indoors.

Even if it’s just a walk, get outside!

Find out what is around you

Check out local blogs, magazines and websites to learn what activities are in your area. Make a list so when you feel restless you can pick something from the list and go.

I am lucky enough to have the Rockies only an hour away

Live in a City? GET OUT OF IT!

Drive until you hit country, stop at a local gas station and ask about hiking trails or local activities. I  was a little lucky in Seattle because there were beaches and lakes and walking trails in the City. But it doesn’t feel the same as being out in the middle of nowhere.

I was always dragging my sisters out to the Snoqualmie area (about 45 min from Seattle) for hiking.

Go to bed early

Okay, I have gotten a lot of flack for being the first person to leave social gatherings and for not drinking a lot. Last  summer I was told I was missing out on life by not partying with my friends. But the next day I hiked to Crypt Lake in Waterton and it was one of the most incredible hikes of my life. I feel that while I was out in the mountains and that individual was sleeping off his hangover that he was the one missing out on life. It’s hard to be adventurous when you are tired and hung over.

I don’t think I missed out going to bed early for this.

Buy the equipment

When I wanted to start snowboarding I went out and spent $400 on gear. When I wanted to start hiking I spent $100 on hiking shoes. I find when I invest in the activity I am more likely to do it because I don’t want my hard earned money to go to waste.

Find active friends

If you have couch potato friends, odds are you won’t be able to talk them in to going on a random adventure. Find some active friends who are up for anything.

My hiking buddy Catherine. That little head at the bottom is her daughter. :)

Just go!

So it’s a beautiful day, you have an activity in mind but you can’t find anyone to come with you. Just go by yourself. I have done many hikes on my own because I wasn’t about to sit at home. Bring music and take off. Make sure someone knows where you are going (just in case).

Would have been a shame to miss out on this because I couldn’t find anyone to come with me. I have hiked Bears Hump alone so many times

Don’t be afraid

My episode of Make it Happen hasn’t aired yet and sometimes I wonder what people think. I mean, what person goes on a random reality TV show? But I got to kayak in an amazing setting with an Olympic medalist kayaker. That once in a lifetime experience is something I will remember forever. It was scary and the night before my flight I was wondering why I do the crazy things I do, but I got over my fear and had a wonderful time.

Kayaking with Adam van Koeverden

So there you have my tips for local adventurous living. If I had money I can only imagine the adventures I would go on.

So what do you do? What’s your favourite local adventure?

I’ve Been a Bad Blogger

19 Sep

Just a quick post to explain why there haven’t been any exciting posts in a few weeks. Between moving into a new house, planning an engagement party and ridiculously crazy work days (we had a massive wildfire and almost had to evacuate part of the City) blogging hasn’t been a priority. Especially when I haven’t been on any adventures! However, next week I leave on a great big adventure that I am very excited for (I’ll tell you  more later). In the meantime, here is my past couple of weeks in the few pictures I have:

Toured an electric substation for work to learn how it all works.

Booked our wedding venue

Checked out the Magrath windmills

Ran a 3k for a work Fun Run

Took me 25 minutes- Yikes!!

Had an engagement party in my backyard

Rings in the cupcakes! :)

I love Good Time Juice!

Decor at night

Took engagement pictures in Waterton

Found this cool thing in the Maskinoge area of Waterton. Breathlessly awaiting the pics!
