Worst Golf Game Ever

9 May

I was super stoked to hit the Magrath Golf Course yesterday after work but I had the worst game ever second only to the first game I have ever played. Ugh! That being said, I actually got my ball over the creek on the fairway! A feat I had yet to do. They always went straight into the water before.

On a side note, I need to google what to wear to golf in and go shopping. Because I obviously have no clue!

Chasing Waterfalls

7 May

When I made plans to go to Salt Lake City for my brother’s graduation, I instantly made plans to do a hike to Fifth Water Hot Springs. We went last year after his wedding and it was such an incredible place I had to return, especially after I found out there is a hole in the rocks in the waterfall you can stick your head through!

It was a wonderful day! I highly recommend this hike to anyone in the SLC/Provo area. It’s not hard with very little elevation gain so children and seniors can handle it.

A gorgeous hike!

Meet My New Adventure Buddy- Rocky Barkboa

8 Apr

I have always wanted a dog but have always been in a rental where it wasn’t possible. After we bought our house in August I decided to wait until after the wedding to commit to a puppy. The weekend we returned from Hawaii, I found a little black lab who stole my heart and I brought him home.

Rocky and I have already had a couple of adventures. On an unseasonably warm day we went and played in the mud.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 7- Surfing & Final Beach Day

6 Apr

It was hard to believe how fast our honeymoon went. When we first arrived it seemed like we had a lot of time and all of a sudden it was over.

We had only gotten to surf once because we were so busy so this was our last chance to try to catch a wave. It didn’t go well, neither of us did catch a wave but I enjoyed my time on the water big time. Ryan felt it was a waste of time (he doesn’t get the zen of surfing I guess). But we did get a bunch of fun shots on the beach.

After this not so successful surf session, we dropped off the boards and hung out/showered on Kualoa Beach.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 6- Hiking Hauula Trail & Laie Point

5 Apr

We started off that morning with a hike on Hauula Trail Loop.  It is a 3 mile loop with a little climbing, a great place for a trail run or a family hike.

Park at the beach across from 7-11 and head up the residential road towards the mountain.

DSCF3538

There is a little parking at that yellow gate ahead but it’s better to park on the beach

DSCF3539

You’ll walk along a road for a little bit

DSCF3540

To the right you’ll see this sign for the beginning of the loop

I’ll warn you right here. At the loop you get to choose to go right or left. We went right because it started off uphill so we thought we would get the uphill climb out of the way. Go left! There is less climbing if you go left than to the right.

It was a great, easy, beautiful hike

We stopped by Laie Point to see if we could jump (like I did in 2008) but it was way too windy and choppy so we got a few pictures and called it a day.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 5- Funeral, Snorkelling & a Show

4 Apr

Saturday was a unique day because it was my Great Uncle’s funeral. You would never guess it looking at me, but my great grandmother is Samoan. This was Ryan’s chance to meet my brown relatives. Not exactly the happiest occasion for it, but it was nice to be there to pay my respects and represent my mom’s family.

After the funeral, we headed to Turtle Bay cove for more snorkelling and the most incredible thing happened, we swam with a sea turtle!! All my years of snorkelling in that cove and I finally got to swim with a wild sea turtle.

Ryan really enjoyed snorkelling

That evening, we headed to the Polynesian Cultural Centre evening show, Ha; a breathe of life. I have been going to the night show for a long time and this was the most dramatic, pageantry one I’ve seen.

These photos don’t belong to me, I googled them

It was wonderful! Ryan and I did laugh because there was one skinny white guy dancing and he stood out like a sore thumb. If we had more money, I would have taken Ryan to the centre for the day as there is so much great cultural stuff to see and learn.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 4- Hiking to Laie Falls

3 Apr

One must-do item on our vacation itinerary was hiking to Laie Falls. I did this hike with my sister Leilani in 2008 and I had to share this experience with Ryan.

This is about a 10 mile round trip hike and the incline isn’t too bad.

DSCF3485

Ryan always starts our hikes off with a cigarette. Ha!

Park at the football field or the cricket field and head through the gates onto that dirt road. Follow it in a little ways until you see this blue sign on the left side.

DSCF3486

I don’t know about the permit thing. We didn’t have one and I don’t know if you would have got in trouble because of it.

The trail starts off on a slight incline

After you turn off the trail toward the falls  you have some scrambling to do to go down to the falls. Proceed cautiously, there are ropes to help you but it is slippery, narrow and steep.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 2- Licking a Dolphin & Honeymooners Walk

1 Apr

On Day 2 we headed to Sea Life Park on the east side of Oahu because Ryan and I had booked a session to swim underwater with the sharks!

We got there just in time to enjoy the dolphin show and watch the world’s only wolphin. A killer whale/dolphin. This show brought me back to the days when I wanted to be a marine biologist. Before I realized you need to be good at science. Ha ha!

Our session wasn’t until 3 p.m. so we enjoyed the park all day. It wasn’t huge, but had a lot of cool things to offer.

When we reported to the activity centre for our swimming with the sharks, they told us they had  a malfunction with the equipment and they couldn’t take us under with the sharks.  They offered to upgrade us to the dolphin encounter which includes petting and kissing a dolphin. I was beyond excited but Ryan was disappointed, he really wanted to swim with the sharks.

Hawaiian Honeymoon Day 1- Beach and Turtle Bay

31 Mar

I’m back! Thank goodness for the long weekend which gave me a chance to catch up on everything. I am expecting my wedding pictures any day now so watch my Wedding link for a TON of photos in the next week or so. But I have been dying to share my Hawaiian adventures so let’s get started!

After spending the night in Great Falls and 12 hours of flying or waiting for flights, Ryan and I finally arrived in Oahu! I had been looking forward to show Ryan my favourite place in the world for months and months.

DSCF3376

We rented a condo at Pat’s on Punaluu for only $95/night! A steal for Hawaii. This beach front property was the perfect place for a honeymoon. My only complaint is that the bedroom is on the street side of the place and the traffic was so loud I couldn’t sleep on the comfy bed. But there was a futon in the living room, so we slept there and listened to the waves. You can find the condo we stayed in HERE.

Image

We spent the morning out on the beach right in front of us, swimming around and enjoying the beach. Ryan saw his first sea turtle (a big guy too) swim by us and we both got our first reef scratches, ha ha!

After lunch we headed to my favourite resort that I have yet to ever stay in; The Turtle Bay in Kahuku. My mum has been taking us to the cove at this resort for years. She even had her second wedding at the Sunset Room in the resort and it’s where we like to eat when we stay on the north shore.

We did a loop around the place and I showed Ryan all the places that he saw on Forgetting Sarah Marshall (one of my favourite movies).

Pre-Wedding Winter Hike to Bertha Falls

13 Mar

The day before my wedding I led a group of friends and family to Bertha Falls in the snow. Because so many of my friends and family had to travel a long way to be with me I wanted to ensure they had a great experience.  I busted out all my extra toques, sweaters, gloves and jackets and away we all went.

sisters!

As always, I was wrong about how long the hike was. I thought it was 2 km altogether, and it was actually 2km each way. So after the scenic viewpoint, we still had a little over a kilometre to go and everyone (especially my City sisters) started to complain. I kept telling them it would be worth the trouble in order to see the beautiful waterfall. But when we got there, the falls were completely covered in snow! We hiked all that way to look at a pile of snow! Needless to say, I had some disappointed hikers.

Hopefully, they still enjoyed being outside.
