Rewind Button- The Great Twenty Eight- Chuck Berry

2 Aug

When I first read this weeks review I immediately thought of a Gilmore Girls quote:

Richard: I’m more of a Chuck Berry man myself.

Lorelai: [Laughs] We’re talking pre- My Dingaling?

Richard: I believe I am.

Anyway, this is a compilation album that leaves out My Dingaling. Of course, I had to listen to it and it is just a silly song but apparently it was a Number 1 hit!

I was pleasantly surprised to hear a few songs that I have on my iPod and enjoy when they come up in shuffle; Maybellene, Johnny B. Goode, No Particular Place to Go. I also really enjoyed Rock & Roll, this song transcended me into a 50s malt shop, dancing to the juke box with a poodle skirt on. I was intrigued when I heard Sweet Little Sixteen because it sounded exactly like Surfing USA. Digging into it a little further I found out that after some litigation the Beach Boys had to credit Surfing Sixteen to Berry.

What I like about Berry’s songs are that they are all straight up stories. There is no poetry or prose, it is plain English telling you what’s happening and for a literal listener like me, I really liked that.

However, all that being said- this album as a whole bored me out of my mind! Every song sound almost exactly alike with the same electric guitar riff opening. And this album is LONG with 28 tracks! It took a lot of patience and a couple of breaks to get through the whole thing. Don’t get me wrong, I love Chuck Berry and his music but his songs belong in my shuffle mix so I can enjoy the songs once in awhile not in a row.
