My Brother Got Married!

29 May

This past weekend, the Tynan clan met up in Salt Lake City to celebrate the marriage of my little brother Bruce to his wife Lauren.  He is the first kid in my immediate family to get married and it is so weird!

Some major highights include; getting to dance in with the wedding party and tripping over the stage in front of everyone, taking  a picture in the water fountain with my cousins, hiking to an amazing hot spring (post about that to come), hard core parkour, and singing Grease in the middle of an outdoor mall!

Congrats Bruce & Lauren!

Grandma was so happy to be surrounded by all her grandchildren

Rewind Button- Elvis, The Sun Sessions

28 May

I am almost a week late with this post due to travelling and a wedding but here it is! Last weeks album was Sun Session by the Elvis Presley. The Sun Sessions is a compilation of Elvis recordings at Sun Studios in 1954 and 1955. Of the 20+ songs recorded during this time, this album has 15 songs.

Elvis Presley is dreamy and I know I would have been obsessed with him back in the day. Which is why I’m bummed that I didn’t care for this album. It’s okay, I didn’t hate it, but it’s not one I can see myself popping into my CD player on a road trip. The songs were short, almost all were under 3 minutes and they all sounded alike. I know many people like albums with a cohesive sound but my personal preference are albums with a variety of sounds so I don’t get bored.

That’s Alright- This is an Elvis song I think everyone has heard before. It’s a good opening song to the album and gets your toes tapping. However, as the album goes on, the rest of the songs almost all sound like this and it takes away from it a bit.

Mystery Train- Back in the days of records, this was the first song on the second side. It had an upbeat sound and gets your toe tapping, but again it sounds just like all the other songs except the word “train” stands out.

Such a dreamboat!!

Regaining My Confidence on a Horse

22 May

This weekend my cousin Jenn called and asked if I wanted to go riding with her, of course I jumped at the chance! But what surprised me was how scared I was. I had a bad throw last summer and haven’t ridden since and I couldn’t believe how I lost all my confidence. Years of riding and now I am like  a beginner starting all over again. I refused to let my horse go faster than a walk and when I got off the horse my jeans were damp from sweat.  Jenn and I vowed to start riding together at least once a week so I can get my confidence back.

Hiking to Lower Bertha Falls and Waterton Biking

20 May

I love living so close to a beautiful place like Waterton and I got some much needed exercise in my favourite place.

Lower Bertha Falls is a very easy hike about 3km (6km round trip) with very little climbing. It offers amazing views and has a few benches placed along the trail to rest. This is a great alternative to Bears Hump because it is mainly flat and all ages can finish this one.

Nothing better than a hike

My playground

Gorgeous views

Lower Bertha Falls

Mt.Vimy

We went off trail when we heard running water and discovered this little waterfall

Had to climb up there!

After our little hike we took our road bikes and headed to the Kootenai Brown trail. This bike/walk path was built last summer and it goes from the town site to the park gates.

Not a bad view for a bike ride

I just love living so close to a place like this!

The Rewind Button- The Beatles, The White Album

17 May

This is another album that is all over the place with no symmetry in the songs. But I like that. I like being surprised by each different sounding song and I will say right off this may be my favourite Beatles album yet!

Where do I start with this album?

How about the interesting back story? “The album was written and recorded during a period of turmoil for the group, after visiting the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India and having a particularly productive songwriting session in early 1968. Returning to the studio, the group recorded from May to October 1968, only to have conflict and dissent drive the group members apart. Ringo Starr quit the band for a brief time, leaving Paul McCartney to play drums on two tracks. Many of the songs were “solo” recordings, or at least by less than the full group, as each individual member began to explore his own talent.”

This was such an upbeat album and while I hated the last two songs; the annoying grating Revolution 9 and the weird 50s sounding Good Night ballad, the rest of the album really stuck with me.

I loved the opening song Back in the USSR, It had an almost White Stripes-esque quality to it and was so different from their other two albums I listened to.

I couldn’t stand Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, I thought it belonged on a toddler’s cartoon more than anywhere else.

You HAVE to read the back story to Story of Bungalow Bill. You can find it here. When I saw that Yoko Ono was on this I thought there might be some interesting back story to it and is there ever, Hint: Ashram in India and tiger hunting.

Birthday was a fun song that I intend to rock out to on my birthday this year.

My first introduction to the Beatles was Across the Universe and a lot of the songs from the movie came from this album. That being said, the songs were fantastic in both versions. A little different, but the lyrics and the feel came across the same; Dear Prudence, Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Helter Skelter. I did like the A the U version of Why Don’t We Do It in the Road better than the original as that singers husky voice rocks this song.

I could go on and on about how much I loved this album and intend to buy it for the car.

Swim, Bike, Done! My Tri Race Recap

14 May

After words of encouragement I decided to go ahead and race in the Splash, Pedal, Gasp triathlon yesterday. I went into it with the attitude that it was a long workout, not a race. And though I came in second to last overall (make shame!) I am still glad I sucked it up and did it and I have learned valuable lessons for the future.

Here is a quick recap of my race.

SWIM (500m)

The swim portion took place in a 50m pool. When I saw the length of this pool I got so nervous I seriously considered grabbing my bike and leaving. I had given a seed time of 15:00 so I was in the slow lane. Getting into the water and talking with the other racers in my lane it was pretty much the same story, first timers who were really nervous.

The swim went so much better than expected. I panicked during the first two laps because I couldn’t catch my breath. I was using the three strokes one breath method I was taught in my triathlon training course back in university. After two laps I started taking a breath on every right hand stroke and lo and behold the swim became a lot easier and I was able to catch my breath.

My swim time was 13:48

BIKE (20km)

My transition in the bike area was slow. I hadn’t adjusted my helmet before hand and I was dizzy from the swim so I moved very slowly getting out of there.

Once I started it felt good. I forgot how much I enjoy riding on the road, zipping along and enjoying the view. My butt and thighs were killing me but I pushed through it the best I could and chugged along. One thing I noticed was that my butt and inner thighs would get numb after a bit so I would stand up for a few seconds, let the blood flow and sit back down and go.  Anyone know why this is? I’m guessing I have my seat arranged incorrectly I just don’t know how.

Coming into the transition area, I forgot my feet were strapped in and I came VERY close to falling over.

My bike time was 57:41

My bike in the transition area

RUN (5km)

Oh the run after the bike. Your legs are jelly and you wonder “how the hell am I going to finish?” Off I went and as soon as I was out of sight of the crowd I began to walk. The run was mainly a walk/run until I came up to the last km. You see, Runners Soul race planners are sadistic and like to make people finish on hills. The Moonlight Run ends with a long ass hill and so does the Splash, Pedal, and Gasp.

I walked so slowly up that hill I was glad I was so far back so no one could see me. I almost cried on a couple of occasions and I honestly thought I would NEVER make it! When I finally made it to the top and had a flat 50m left to the finish line I started to jog and my left quad seized up. I have never had a muscle seize up on me before! I’ve torn a muscle but not a seize.  But seize up it did and I did not want to walk over the finish line so I limped that last 50m and finished my race.

My run time was 43:49

FINAL TIME 1:55:19

Lessons Learned

  • TRAIN! Yes I did it without training but it was hard and my time was slow
  • Make sure your top doesn’t drag in the swim (I wore a sports bra)
  • Practice your transitions and have as much ready as possible (helmet straps adjusted, headphones detangled)
  • Have more than one energy gel. I had one that I ate halfway through the race and I really wish I had another while I started the run. It may have helped.
  •  Drink powerade! I almost never drink it because of the sodium, but in a triathlon in the heat, it will really help
  • Lube up your inner thighs before the race! Oh man! I am paying for this one. My inner thighs are rubbed raw today. Make sure you have vaseline or some other lotion, gel or lube to keep that painful rash away
  • Bring support! Ryan offered to go but I figured he would be a grump waiting around all morning but it was really depressing to cross the finish line and have no one there to congratulate you or care. I won’t be doing races any more without a cheer squad

Now I am prepared for the Magrath Triathlon this July and I intend to actually do okay because my training starts this week! For reals!

I may have been slow. But I did it!!

Rewind Button- Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde

10 May

This is another album I listened to back on my February road trip and I loved it.

I learned to love Bob Dylan on that road trip and so several of the songs on this album  stood out to me.

Rainy Day Women #12 & 35- While the sound of this song was too clunky for my liking, I enjoyed the play of words “everybody must get stoned.” I may get stoned (literally) for saying this, but the play on words reminded me of Britney Spears song If You Seek Amy.  Turns out the title which seems to have no correlation with the lyrics was to guarantee radio play. It reache #2 on the Billboard list.

Visions of Johanna- I like this song a lot, it has the Dylan sounds I have learned to love. According to some background researche ”several critics have acclaimed “Visions of Johanna” as one of Dylan’s highest achievements in writing, praising the allusiveness and subtlety of the language.” I find the ryhmes a little obvious and comical but altogether this is a solid song.

One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)-  The lyrics in this song were so pretty, and they were written for a woman who slipped from Dylan’s life. A big like on this song!

I Want You- Okay. I am not a poet so the lyrics of this song confused the hell out of me. I couldn’t make out the point of them. Ha ha. However, the chorus is simple and sweet and I enjoyed the mor eupbeat sound of this song compared to the others.

Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again- Another great sounding (and LONG) song. He tells short stories of a variety of characters. My favourite is the senator with a gun in his pocket handing out free tickets to the wedding of his son. To me that kind of sums up my view of society and where the wedding industry has headed. Whoa. That got a little deep but I’ll move on…

Just Like A Woman- I loved this one too!

Okay, I am going to stop my review because basically I love every song.

To Race or Not To Race?

9 May

This spring I was determined to get into shape. I signed myself up for one race every month from March until August. I am fast approaching my June race, the Splash, Pedal, Gasp triathlon this Sunday.

Here’s the problem- I haven’t trained! At all!!! In fact, I haven’t been on a run in a week and half and I have only one swim workout under my belt this year.

I am trying to decide whether I should drop the race altogether and waste my $75 entry fee or if I should do it at my own pace and call it a long Sunday workout.

What do you think? Should I drop the race or push through it?

Should I push through it or bitch out?

Rewind Button- The Clash, London Calling

3 May

This was another album I listened to on my Seattle road trip back in February. I first heard of The Clash in high school when they mentioned it in my favourite movie of high school, Bring it On. Yup, I’m a nerd.

Here is a little background on the album I found online. The album represented a change in The Clash’s musical style, featuring elements of ska, funk, pop, soul, jazz, rockabilly, and reggae.

The album’s subject matter included social displacement, unemployment, racial conflict, drug use, and the responsibilities of adulthood.

My Thoughts- The album was okay. At first I was digging it but each song sounded just like the one before it and I was bored by track 8 and there were 18 on the album! Nothing stood out to me, it all seemed to run together. Not being a major music person, it seems that is what a good album is supposed to do but I like an album where each song stands out like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

So far this project has helped me learn to love Bob Dylan and some of the Beatles work, will I actually like any of the other albums? We’ll find out.

See what other bloggers had to say about this album.
