It’s Easier to Stay Fit in a Warm Climate

30 Apr

I am a health & fitness blogger groupie. I have about 20 H&F blogs on my Google Reader that I check regularly. Currently, FOAM magazine has a contest going on to find their next H&F blogger and girls are submitting their arguments why they qualify for the job. When I read through some of these candidates posts I realized they were very similar to all the H&F bloggers I follow.

Do you know what all these bloggers have in common? Save for one in C0lorado and one in Vancouver (Shout out to Katy!), all these bloggers live in warm, sunny climates;  Hawaii, Florida, Arizona. It’s a lot easier to stay in shape in a place where it’s summer all year round.  You are in shorts, tank tops and swim suits more often, you have better access to fresh fruit, you have constant sunshine.

This is from a bikini workout posted by one of my fave bloggers Goldfish Kiss. It would be easy for me to do a workout in this location daily! (http://goldfishkiss.com)

But what are we poor Northerners supposed to do? Oh you hear the same old “take up an outdoor sport like xc skiing, snow shoeing, snowboarding, ice skating” and that’s well and good if it’s no colder than -20C. But what about when it is FREEZING cold out? What do you do when you need to go to the gym but you can’t stomach the thought of going to the car and freezing  the whole way to the gym and back because it takes 5-10 minutes for your car to warm up? What do you do when it is so cold that you start to jog and the icy cold burns your lungs? Or you step out of the house and your nose instantly begins to ache? My plan for next winter is to have a bigger home with an extra room to convert into a home gym but if that doesn’t come to fruition, then what?

I get out in the snow a few times a year when it happens to be decent on a weekend (a rarity)

When you live in an area where it’s below -20 for an extended period of time, your body CRAVES fattening, heavy foods to put  more layers of fat on to stay warm and it is very hard to fight those cravings. I feel like a zombie in the winter because of the lack of sunshine and have to take Vitamin D supplements to try to keep my energy up.

I know it’s a moot point now that it’s spring but in preparation for next year does anyone know of a Canadian health writer out there who writes about ways to stay fit in the winter? And I mean a Canadian winter! Are there any H&F bloggers who can commiserate?

Rewind Button- Exile on Main Street, Rolling Stones

27 Apr

This was a crazy busy week at work and I’ve had to listen to this album quietly in front of a desk clacking away and pausing it to take phone calls; not exactly a rock and roll way to listen to a classic rock and roll album.

Some bands stand the test of time. The Beatles and Dylan for example have songs that will stand the test of time. Others like Marvin Gaye, Beach Boys and now Rolling Stones are dated and always will be.

The album opened with Rocks Off which actually wasn’t bad. I felt like the singer had a bit of a Dylan-esque twang top it. I enjoyed the country sound of Shake Your Hips it made me want to sit out on a truck bed in a field somewhere and Tumbling Dice actually had me bopping my head to the beat. I actually felt a little like I was in Dazed & Confused listening to that one.

But other than those few songs this album just ANNOYED me. Casino Boogie sounded like something you hear in the background at a dive bar and I was so happy when Sweet Virginia, Torn & Frayed and Turd on a Run were all over with.

Sorry Generation X, Rolling Stones are just not my thing!

Lovely Day for Golf

23 Apr

Ryan and I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather yesterday and go golfing. We opted to go to a cheap Par 3 in town, Bridge Valley Golf Course. This little course is perfect for beginners. At only $12 a person and short fairways, it was a fun, mellow course to play on. We did get a little annoyed because some groups took the mellow too far and took their sweet times. There were times when there were three groups waiting for one to finish. I still suck at golf but I did learn what chipping was yesterday so that’s good. Ha ha!

Pink clubs, bag and balls

Putting sucks

I made this shot! Just kidding. I suck. Ha ha!

Rewind Button- Marvin Gaye, What’s Goin On

19 Apr

Marvin Gaye’s album Let’s Get it On was one I listened to way back in February on a road trip.  This was a difficult album to listen to. I am not a smooth R&B kind of person and many of his songs revolved around sex.  It definitely had a 70s sound but was not my cup of tea.

I did a little background research and it turns out this is Marvin Gaye’s 11th album.  I also read that this album features introspective lyrics and socially-conscious themes about drug abuse, poverty, and the Vietnam War. Say what? Was I listening to the same album? Perhaps I tuned out the lyrics and only heard what I wanted?

I can’t wait to read what the other bloggers think because I think I missed the boat on this album.  Next week is Exile on Main Street by The Rolling Stones.

Also, we have a new blogger! My buds Keirstyn at her blog Be a River With Me will join the group. :)

Race Recap- I Should Have Trained!

16 Apr

I felt so good after the Moonlight Run last month! I trained hard and was happy with my time and performance and kept up my training to prepare for the Lethbridge College 10/4 Miler. That is, until wicked food poisoning knocked me on my butt for over a week.  I felt better the following week but was just too lazy to bother to train. I think I got two runs in in the three weeks leading up to the race.

This was the first five minutes of the race. See how red my face is?

What goes around comes around because that race was a struggle! I had to walk before I even hit the first mile marker. I think I walked more than I ran. The whole time I was yelling at myself (in my head) for allowing myself to fall out of shape in a matter of weeks, especially when I have a triathlon coming up next month.

When I rounded the corner to the finish line, I saw a one armed chubby woman who had a head start ahead of me and my competitiveness kicked in. I know it sounds silly, but I didn’t want to come in behind her and look like she beat me- my pride just wouldn’t allow it.   Though I was exhausted and had nothing left I kicked it into a massive sprint and beat her by about 20 seconds. Lol.

I still sucked, my final time was 46:07. Which is about a 11:30 minute mile. Ouch!! I learned my lesson. I am hitting the gym and hitting it hard. No more marathon cuddle sessions on the couch with my honey, I have GOT to get my butt into gear.

Here I am telling Ryan "I'm SO slow!!"

Rewind Button- Rubber Soul, The Beatles

12 Apr

Week 5 of the Rewind Button and our third Beatles album! Rolling Stone mag really has a thing for this British foursome.  This week, it was Rubber Soul, the Beatles sixth album pulled together in four weeks.

My thoughts? It was painful to sit through this. It’s a shame because I loved Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Ban and I am STILL listening to Revolver at work but Rubber Soul didn’t do much for me. Almost of it’s songs were under 3 minutes which was a change since the songs on the other albums could get pretty long.

I’ve Just Seen A Face This is probably the best song on the album and makes for a strong opening. While I prefer the Across the Universe version (the guitar is stronger sounding) it’s still an upbeat tune.

But then I went further into the album and just did not like the songs. I’m Looking at You was okay with a super 60s upbeat sound but still not a song I would turn on while driving.

In My Life was the only other song I liked and even then it’s because I have heard another version of it somewhere (don’t remember where) that was more dramatic sounding that I really liked. But the original is still a good song.

Overall, this is my least favourite Beatles album so far. Looking at the list though, I have three more Beatles albums to go.

First Hike of the Season- Bears Hump

10 Apr

To end my long weekend with a bang I made my way out to my fave place (Waterton) to see my bestie Keirstyn and for some much needed hiking. The forecast was +10 and the town site is almost snow free already.

Had to get a shot of Cameron Falls

I need to step up my lower body workouts. Those legs are looking big!!

It was so beautiful by the lake

HIKING BEARS HUMP

After my fun with Keir I headed to Bears Hump for my first hike of the season and I was pumped! I got a little thrill putting on my hiking shoes again.

Hello shoes..I've missed you!

When I started the hike, the trial looked good. A little soft with some snow but nothing too bad.

Start of the trail

Then it quickly turned to this! It was so slick the whole way up which made the hike twice as hard.  It was actually worse coming down because I didn’t want to lose control and slip and smash my head on a rock. At some points I was crawling on my hands and feet backwards to avoid a slip.

This was so sketchy coming down!

My foot fell in a couple of times

But as always, Bears Hump is worth the effort.

The water was like glass yesterday

Heaven!

My First Golf Game Ever

8 Apr

I bought my own set of clubs two summers ago. I have always lived by the motto that if you invest money into a sport you are more likely to stick with it, it’s what I did for snowboarding anyway. I have been going to driving ranges for three years now but never had the courage to try an actual course. So when Ryan suggested we go golfing today I was so excited to get in there and do it. How did I do? Er…. That’s not important. Lol. What’s important is that I had a great time.

Ryan lost 9 balls today. Lol

The Rewind Button- Bob Dylan Highway 61 Revisited

5 Apr

This is another album I listened to on my Seattle road trip in February. Mr. Dylan was a surprise because I absolutely loved the two albums I had! I was not expecting to at all,  but the mellow songs that were longer than normal were soothing and the perfect road trip music. Of all the albums I listened to on that trip, Dylan was the only one I listened to more than once.

The strong opening song “How Does it Feel” really got me into the sound and I enjoyed the rest of the songs a lot.

I can honestly think of no other better road trip/summer music than this album. It is chillax, mellow and Dylan writes strong lyrics- not all love ballads- but songs with a lot of meaning.
