Rewind Button- The Beatles Revolver

29 Mar

This week the challenge was to listen to the Beatles Revolver. As usual I waited until the last minute, listening to it today- which is a bummer because I could have had a whole week enjoying this album. I actually like this one better than Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Band which I didn’t think was possible.  This album has a very upbeat, sunny sound and it makes me feel like I should be listening to it while lying in a summer field somewhere.

Taxman was a great opening song for the album. It has a great beat that I found myself bopping my head along to.

Eleanor Rigby has a very sad, dramatic sound but when you listen to the lyrics, the people aren’t THAT sad or lonely. Eleanor dreamed of being married (what woman doesn’t) the priest didn’t have anyone show up for his sermons and he had to darn his own socks (big whoop) and Eleanor has no one at her funeral. That last part was sad, but I thought for such a dramatic sound, the principal character wasn’t different from half the women in my grandmas old folks home.

I still got my sitar in the song Love You To (I love me some sitar).

A couple of their songs had lyrics that are still relatable to people today- For No One and Got to Get You Into My Life. I liked GTGYIML a lot. It was bouncy, happy and sweet and it made me think of my own sweetheart who I’m glad came into my life.  (Sap alert!)

The two songs that really made me imagine sunshine, flowers and fields were Here, There & Everywhere and Good Day Sunshine.

So there you have it, even though it is #3 on the Rolling Stones list I like it better than the first two.

The Rewind Button- Beach Boys

22 Mar

It’s already Thursday and I had listened to the Beach Boys Pet Shop boys way back in February during a road trip to Seattle.  On this road trip I listened to Marvin Gaye, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, and the Clash.

Anyway, back to Beach Boys; Pet Sounds.

I have extremely fond memories of the song Kokimo. My Dad used to blast it when he drove us to school about two years before he passed away. I can’t listen to that song without being transported back into his truck singing along with him. Naturally, I thought that I would enjoy the mellow sounds of Pet Sounds.

However,  I was not a fan! I found the songs very boring on this  album, they did not sound like Kokimo at all.  I was itching to skip songs, but I forced myself to listen to the whole album and aside from two songs that are still popular, such as Sweet Caroline and Wouldn’t it Be Nice, I didn’t care for it.

Kind of a short review. Want to read more? Read what these other bloggers had to say about the album!

“The Rewind Button” & My First Beatles Album

15 Mar

At the suggestion and work of one of my fave bloggers Reb of Life Doesn’t Have to Suck my new years resolution has taken a bit of a twist. I now have eight other bloggers who will be listening to albums with me and reviewing them every Thursday. We’ll link to each other’s reviews and compare notes. I loved this idea because the same music is interpreted completely different for each person.

The project, so aptly dubbed The Rewind Button will include the following blogs (and myself of course):

Going in order of Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Albums of all time, our first review was The Beatles- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I LOVED this album! My first memory of the Beatles was my dad playing their music on his record player and remember not liking it. I prefered the top hits my mom was listening to, Paula Abdul, Michael Jackson, etc. So when I popped this album in I wasn’t expecting much. Boy was I ever wrong!

This album was so awesome to listen to because every song has a different sound than the other. Unlike some artists, it was a kaleidoscope of songs which makes me wonder if that’s why the cover is so colorful and all over the place.

One of my favourite songs was Within You Without You (Reb’s least favourite) that had sitar in the background and made me feel like I was in yoga class. I went through an obsession with Bollywood for a while, so I am attributing that to my love of this song.

Some of the classic songs used in Across the Universe are on this album, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, A Little Help From My Friends.

There is a reason this album has been ranked #1, there is a song in there for everyone.

Be sure to check out the other bloggers for their take on the album!

Next Week The Rewind Button will Review Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys.

I ran a 6k…and I liked it!

13 Mar

I have always said I am not a distance runner. I ran high school cross country for something to do and in one race they started the boys because they thought all the girls were done and I was still running the course. THAT is how terrible I have been at cross-country! But at 27, with a rapidly expanding butt, I signed up for Lethbridge’s Moonlight Run as motivation to actually hit the gym on a regular basis.

When I first signed up, I also registered Ryan who said he didn’t need to train and that he could give me and my friend Catherine (who is 7 months pregnant) a head start and still win. That pushed Catherine and I to really train hard. About two weeks before the race Ryan went on his first run a couple of blocks to a friend’s house. When he got back he let me know he would not be running the race after all. Ha ha ha ha ha!

We are ready to run!

But the training paid off . I was shooting for an hour which I know is slow, but bear in mind my history with distance running. Imagine my surprise when I crossed the finish line at 44:20! Not exactly fast, but for me that was like lightning. I was very happy. Now I really want to run another one to see if I can beat this time. This course (which by the way had no moonlight because it was a new moon!) ended with about a mile climb up a long, gradual hill. I walked up that whole sucker- there was no way I could run it. I bet on a flat course I would have a much better time.

Shout out to Catherine! At 7 months pregnant she completed it in 50 minutes! Talk about inspiration!!

The best part of this?  Being competitive! I miss sports so much and I can’t tell you how much fun I had passing people and pushing myself during this race. My goal is to do one race per month through the spring and summer. Hopefully that, combined with ball and hiking, will help me take off some major poundage!

I've got the running bug now!
