Review: New West Theatre’s Twist & Shout

30 Jun

I was really excited when the recruiting company I got my current position through had an event around the opening night of the New West Theatre‘s summer production Twist & Shout. I absolutely LOVE musicals and live theatre so I drug my semi-reluctant boyfriend with me and went to the Yates Theatre.

I was disappointed after the first two numbers when I realized that this wasn’t a musical with a plot, etc., it was a musical performance. But that disappointment quickly went away as I enjoyed not only a series of excellent music numbers that made me want to throw on a poodle skirt and start twisting, but there were a series of comedic skits in between numbers which had me laughing aloud several times. I snort when I laugh, and there were two other snorters in the audience so you can imagine what it sounded like.

This is NOT the cast of Twist & Shout. Unfortunately they did not have any photos on their website or facebook page.

I did not grab a program which is a shame because there were a couple particular standouts. The little blonde with the big voice, the energetic and hilarious hostess whose faces reminded me of Lucille Ball and whose impersonation of Elvis had me shrieking with laughter. They had my reserved boyfriend laughing aloud too which is not an easy feat.

This was an excellent, excellent show and one I would consider seeing again.

New West Theatre is also putting on a second show later this summer called Born to Rock and Ryan and I both agreed we will be there.

Goat Haunt Hike- Waterton AB

29 Jun

I took yesterday off work to take my little brother on a long hike. because all the high elevation hikes are still in poor condition with avalanche warnings, we decided to do Goat Haunt, a hike that runs into Montana’s Glacier National Park.

Thinking the hike was only 7km, we had planned on going there and back. We left at 1pm. It turns out the hike is a little over 11km one way.

The first half of the hike was gorgeous! There were all kinds of cool views down Waterton Lake.

We stumbled upon a beautiful cove next to the Bertha Bay campsite. It reminded me of the West Coast the way the tree covered cliffs descended into the water.

My little brother decided to go for a quick swim in Waterton’s freezing waters.

Right next to the cove is the only uphill climb to Goat Haunt. It was through a trail blazed along a cliff overhang.

There were tons of streams running across the trail as there is a lot of snow on the peaks still melting.

My camera battery died at the border which I was really upset about because there was some great scenery. I stole some shots from a Facebook friend and a few from Google to complete this posting. The markers show the border, as well as a very distinct clearing that runs up the mountains on either side.

Right after the border crossing was this gorgeous, turquoise coloured river making its way to the lake. After the river we walked through a meadow with stunning views of Mt. Cleveland.

However, after that first section of the U.S. hike, it got very, very boring. Just a typical every day hike , surrounded by trees with occasional glimpses of mountains.

A half mile before the Goat Haunt Range Station we had to cross a suspension bridge. It wasn’t rickety or anything, very solid, but I was still very excited to cross my first extension bridge ever.

Once we got to the ranger station we checked in and I got a souvenir stamp on my passport. But when we asked what time it was the ranger told us 5 o’clock! We couldn’t believe it had taken us so long when we barely stopped. Then again, Goat Haunt was actually about 11km NOT 7km. oops!

The Waterton Cruise boat was docked with tourists getting off to explore so we decided to go talk to them and see if we could hitch a ride. We told the Captain our dilemma and told him we could pay our fare after going to the car at the Bertha trail head and snagging our wallets. He let us and we took a leisurely ride up Waterton Lake back to Waterton.

I was a little sticker shocked when I had to pay $48 for two one way tickets, but it was way better than hiking 11km back in the semi darkness.

All in all, Goat Haunt is an AMAZING hike! It’s not too challenging, elevation wise, but it is a good trek. The scenery is stunning, the best of any hike I have done in Waterton yet. And I am definitely grabbing my boyfriend and making him do this hike with me, possible camping halfway through too just to extend the fun. I was in HEAVEN the whole day. It was 25, sunny, the forest smelled amazing, the birds were singing and I was away from my computer and out and about. A fantastic day off!

Lethbridge Dragon Boat Festival Recap

27 Jun

What a fun and exhausting weekend! It was the Lethbridge Dragon Boat Festival and my second year racing. This year, I dragged my boyfriend and little brother into doing it with me. First off, both our morning races were early in the morning. We had to be up before seven both Saturday and Sunday- no bueno.

The only picture I have so far. I'll post more as my teammates start sharing them.

Our times Saturday were:

  • First race- 2:41
  • Second race- 2:34

Our times Sunday were:

  • Semi Final Race- 2:31 (first place)
  • Final Race- 2:37 (3rd place)

So we wound up coming in third in ‘D’ division and winning a bronze medal. I would have been more stoked if we hadn’t lost by seven seconds to the Boys and Girls Club!!! That’s right, our adult team was destoyed by a group of pre-teens!  Mind you, their boat weighed half of everyone else’s… right? Ha!

But it was a great weekend with good music, food and vendors. And even though we got poured on all day Sunday, it was a good time. I’ll definitely be there next year, don’t know if my boyfriend and brother will be though. Ha ha.

I have GOT to stop going out in public without make up! Damn bf making me feel pretty without it. Lol!

Ben and I donned dragon tattoos for good luck

Enjoyed watching belly dancers

Enjoying live music on Saturday- the nice day

I am still having trouble getting the hang of this game. Yesterday, I tripped running into home and got a nice raspberry on my leg. It’s about the size of my palm.

It stings so bad. Lol!

Hiking Crandell in Waterton

20 Jun

There is so much snow still in Waterton it’s crazy. Cameron Lake is covered in snow and it is impossible to get to the buildings. Because of all this snow, there weren’t many hikes covered in snow besides the basics, Bears Hump and Bertha Falls. One that was open was Crandell. I have never done it before and so my little brother and I checked it out.

If you are looking for an easy 4km walk with no steep climbs, this is the hike for you. It also doesn’t have all that much in terms of scenery, the lake is small and the hike itself is your basic forest hike. The highlight of this hike was the small stream we had to get across toward the turnaround point.

This hike can be reached from red Rock Canyon Highway or Cameron Lake highway. It’s perfect if you have small kids or are out of shape and don’t want any serious climbing.

It was still a beautiful day and I enjoyed every second I was outside.

Ben and I hit up Henderson Lake yesterday in the rain to get in a paddling practice for Dragonboat. I LOVE this sport. I did it last year and recruited Ben and Ryan for this  year. Races are next weekend.

Ben enjoyed his first paddle session

We got rained on the whole session

It's fun that I get to share this experience with my little brother
